Rediscovering Your Inner Light Amidst Shadow Work

In the journey of self-discovery and personal growth, “lightening up” is a powerful reminder to balance the heavy, introspective work with moments of joy, levity, and self-compassion. It’s about finding harmony between understanding our shadows and embracing our inherent light.

What Does It Mean to Lighten Up?

To lighten up means to allow ourselves to experience life with a sense of ease and playfulness. It’s about taking a step back from the intense scrutiny of our flaws and challenges and giving ourselves permission to enjoy the present moment. Lightening up doesn’t mean ignoring our issues or avoiding personal growth; rather, it’s about integrating moments of lightness into our journey to maintain a healthy balance.

The Shadow Work: A Double-Edged Sword

Shadow work, the process of exploring the darker aspects of our psyche, is crucial for healing and growth. It involves acknowledging and integrating the parts of ourselves that we often suppress or deny. While this work is essential, it can also become overwhelming and all-consuming if we lose sight of the balance.

How We Can Let Our Light Dim

  1. Over-identification with Shadows: When we delve too deeply into our shadows, we may begin to identify too closely with our flaws and past traumas, forgetting that we are also beings of light and potential.
  2. Neglecting Self-Care: Intense focus on shadow work can lead us to neglect self-care and the activities that bring us joy and fulfillment.
  3. Perfectionism: The drive to “fix” ourselves can overshadow our ability to appreciate our current selves and our accomplishments.
  4. Isolation: Immersing ourselves in shadow work can lead to isolation, as we may withdraw from social interactions and support systems.

Tips to Lighten Up and Reconnect with Your Light

  1. Incorporate Playfulness: Engage in activities that make you laugh and feel carefree. Whether itโ€™s dancing, painting, or playing with pets, let yourself experience the joy of play.
  2. Practice Gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for. This shifts your focus from whatโ€™s wrong to whatโ€™s right in your life.
  3. Mindfulness and Presence: Practice mindfulness to stay grounded in the present moment. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and nature walks can help you reconnect with your light.
  4. Connect with Loved Ones: Spend time with people who uplift you. Human connections are powerful reminders of love and support.
  5. Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend. Acknowledge your efforts and progress, no matter how small.

Welcome! Chances are you ended up here for a reason. More than likely, you suffer from trauma, or know someone who has. Traumatic events are a near-ubiquitous human experience. A general population survey conducted in 24 countries showed that more than 70 percent of respondents experienced a traumatic event.

This 20 hour course is about Trauma Recovery, and the healing journey of empowering yourself and others with research and science backed methods to self-regulate. Anyone and everyone who has been through a traumatic experience, who leads a stressful life, or who wants to continue their education and grow their own practice, will benefit from this training.

Trauma disconnects the body from the mind, and this practice reconnects them.

What is trauma-informed yoga?

Trauma-informed yoga describes an approach to the practice that addresses the specific needs and symptoms of trauma survivors.

This form of yoga may include self-regulation strategies to:

  • increase body awareness (interoception) in a safe and controlled way, which can promote feelings of physical, emotional, and psychological safety.
  • address nervous system dysregulation, dissociation, and feelings of disconnection from the body or surroundings, which are common after experiencing trauma

What are Somatics?

Somatics describes any practice that uses the mind-body connection to help you survey your internal self and listen to signals your body sends about areas of pain, discomfort, or imbalance. These practices allow you to access more information about the ways you hold on to your experiences in your body.

  • โ€‹After completing this training, you will qualify for certification, and the Yoga Alliance recognizes this course as 20 hours of CEUs. You do not need to be a certified yoga teacher to attend the course for personal development, and no yoga experience is required.
  • You will be able to adapt your current yoga offerings to make them more trauma sensitive.
  • โ€‹You will be able to view yoga classes through the trauma lens and make intelligent, compassionate choices about the class environment, sequencing, choice of asana, pranayama, meditation.

Bringing the Sky Closer to You

The Harvest Moon, one of the most enchanting celestial events of the year, is almost here! On Friday September 29th, 2023, be prepared to witness a breathtaking display of lunar beauty as the full moon graces our night sky. This year’s Harvest Moon promises to be a spectacle you won’t want to miss, and we’re here to help you celebrate it in style.

What is the Harvest Moon?
The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox. Traditionally, it was a vital time for farmers to work late into the night, harvesting their crops by the moon’s light. This unique moon rises shortly after sunset, casting a warm, golden glow over the landscape, making it appear larger and more luminous than other full moons.

Creating a Moon Ceremony for Children
Introducing children to the wonders of the night sky can be an enriching and magical experience. Here are a few ideas to create a memorable moon ceremony for the young ones in your life:

1.ย Moon Gazing:ย Find a cozy spot with a clear view of the moonrise. Lay out blankets, pillows, or sleeping bags and encourage children to lie down and gaze at the moon. Share stories and myths about the moon’s magic while pointing out interesting features through binoculars or a telescope if available.

2.ย Moon Crafts:ย Get creative with moon-themed crafts. Provide materials like clay, paper, and paint, so children can mold their interpretation of the moon’s surface or create beautiful moon-themed artwork. Don’t forget to display their creations as a reminder of this special night.

A few weeks ago I took a trip to Nova Scotia, Canada to visit my grandmother for the first time in fiveย years.ย Between her move to The Maritimes, and my move to Mexico, plusย the Pandemic in between, it had been way too long since I held her hands.

This trip was even more special because it was a girls trip my sister and I made together…with her new baby girl. It’s hard to describe the emotions I felt seeing my niece in the arms of my grandmother (Nana), but I found myself in awe of our fourย generations of life. I took a mental imprint of how their hands intertwined ~ an elder and a baby. My Nana’s weathered with age and experience…shaped by theย five children she raised, the nine grandchildren she nurtured, and now the eightย great grandchildren she has held.

Being in her presence inspired me inย many ways, and one of them is to take more time to heal ancestrally.ย 

Trauma can be passed down 7 generations!

You are a unique individual. Everything about you is completely one-of-a-kind from your fingerprints to the way your DNA expresses itself to your gifts and personality. However, as unique as you are, you are also the product of a long line of people that have come before you and everything that they experienced also lives in your cellular memory.
